Weird issues D600 - auto focus points have disappeared - diopter not working

My brother bought a D600 when the "great deal" occurred. Tonight his had two issues:
1) No "focus point indicator" is visible in the viewfinder, although the one in live view ia visible. The camera takes focused images. But when he uses 1/2 shutter to focus there is a red flash visible on the edges of the viewfinder image. We tried ALL the focus point selections, from d39 to S, no "box" is visible to indicate focus point selected. Image review shows focus points used in shots.
2) Diopter adjusts, but NEVER achieves clarity. (the images ARE in focus, just not the viewfinder image). Live view works fine.

Two button reset fails to resolve, as does removal and reinsertion of battery. Battery shows charged.

Ideas?

Could this be an SD card issue? Camera needs to be returned?
