A friend recently upgraded his Canon kit to a 1DX and 50mm and 85mm f1.2 lenses and is now positively snorting his superiority (!) over my D4 and f1.4 primes. Which got me thinking, Nikon used to produce f1.2's, so why does it now stop at f1.4 for it's current top end primes?

A. f1.2 is largely unnecessary these days with the DR of the D800, for example

Aperture is for depth of field, not for exposure. What DR has to do with it no idea, if you want to talk exposure anyway, you must mean high ISO performance. The D800 is not the best in high ISO results.

B. If even possible with the 'smallish' F-mount aperture, the cost would be nuts

C. Limited demand (see A above)

The demand is not limited at alll, among real photographers and artists. The Canon EF 50mm f1.2 L USM sells fine. So does the Canon E 85mm f1.2 L USM.

I always find it strange how some people dismiss a lens just because it is not a lens for them.

The Difference in DOF between 1.4 and 1.2 is so small it is irrelevant for practical purposes. Heck the same could be said for the difference between 1.8 and 1.2.

Just what are "practical purposes" though? The differences between f/1.4 and f/1.2 are not massive but they are clearly noticble. If your shooting at a very high level professionally such small advanatges can be significant.
