With LR there are a number of ways to do what you want and the results do not have to be saved to anywhere as LR is non destructive.

Ways to Process many files quickly in LR4

  1. "Sync with Previous"
  2. "Sync Settings"
  3. Copy and past settings to multiple files.
  4. Use the spray can painter to "paint settings" to a photo. Simply a matter of clicking on each photograph that you want to apply the settings to. This is very fast.
In all cases you can predetermine which settings to use.

All of the above methods are quick and simple to use with the added benefit the changes to the photos do not have to be "saved".

For RAW they are stored in a sidecar file.
