R1900 maintenance

My once dependable Epson R1900 is working very poorly. Every time I print, the initial result is horrible; running the cleaning cycle usually solves the problem, but only temporarily.

Last night, I made a print which was terrible, ran the cleaning cycle, and made two perfectly good prints. I printed a test page ten hours later and it showed many gaps in the patterns.

I have learned that many of you are using more sophisticated cleaning procedures than the one the printer can do itself. Where can I learn about this stuff?
