The D5200 has a Toshiba sensor. It has impressive specs in many areas (highest QE of any Nikon sensor, lowest read noise) so no doubt that was why it was selected. Perhaps that performance came at the cost of this banding.

It seems Sony sensors are the king of the mountain these days and the Toshiba seemed to be better but perhaps not.

The Canon 5D2 owners have real banding problems. Worse than this by a long way. The 5D3 has improved this but still has vertical patterns in shadows when pushed.

So this is more like Canon performance and we have been spoilt by the recent crop of sensors that have an extra 2 stops down in the shadows that can be recovered as in D800 and D600.
