If the D7100 is any kind of reference, our belief ( some of us, anyway ) that the D800 and D4 have the same AF system but that the D800 is "detuned" may be wrong. The difference may be that there's enough of us with a problem in our D800 AF systems and have voiced concerns over it, that it has been sort of accepted that maybe it's not an issue, but a different "tune" to the system.

If the D7100 AF system is as Nikon is touting it, with the following right from their website here,

http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d7100/features01.htm

"AF capability comparable to the D4 professional model – high-density 51-point AF system that includes compatibility up to f/8"

AND

"the densely located 51 focus points, supported by an algorithm equivalent to that of the D4"

AND

"The D7100 achieves faster initial AF detection by employing the algorithm developed for the D4. The speed you need to effectively capture decisive moments has been radically boosted."

then it is almost inconceivable that a $1000 DX body would get the D4 AF system, while the $3000 D800 body would not. ( rounding the prices off to even thousands )
