Why is the Panny 14-45mm lens being superseded by the 14-42mm?

I just bought, for use with my G3,  a Panasonic 14-45mm lens having done some research that seems to indicate that it is superior to the Panasonic 14-42mm. So, I'm quite surprised that Panny has seen fit to offer the 14-42, these days, as a kit lens in preference to the 14-45. Anyone have any idea why they should do this? Could it just be to save costs?
