They have not adopt the crop. It is just to speed up the FPS.

Nikon doesn't just do this for an extra 1 fps, but virtually all higher end Nikon's like the D4, D800, D600 offer a DX (1.5X) crop mode. The D7100 1.3X crop mode has many advantages, and isn't just to raise FPS, but is extremely useful for wildlife and sports shooters.

The only negative I see is the image in the viewfinder will still be small, compared to mirrorless systems which could show the cropped view.
