With all due respect - Is a larger buffer (from Nikon's point of view) enough reason to market a D400 @ $1,800.00 between the D600 and D7100? Or do you suspect they would release it above $2,000.00?

No, they can still add things like AF-ON, CF card, Qual, ISO , WB on the left dial ... less polycarbonate on the body too.

Yes, but consider the difference between the D90 and the D300 and then the difference between the D7100 and a D400 with features you mentioned (larger buffer, extra buttons, less polycarbonate).

D90 vs. D300:

  • 19 vs. 51 AF points
  • 4.5  vs 6/8 fps
  • 96 vs. 100% viewfinder coverage

D7100 vs. 'D400':

  • 51 vs. 51 AF points
  • 6/7.3 vs 6/8 fps
  • 100 vs. 100% viewfinder coverage

A 'D400' might get a faster frame rate but hardly more AF points or more than 100% viewfinder coverage.
