fine tuning is a band aid

Fine tuning is not the same as in camera adjustment. In camera corrects for focus distance, fine tuning doesn't. True, you may get similar results with a prime, but what about a zoom? No way can fine tune adjust over the zoom range.

And everytime you borrow/rent/buy a lens you'll have to fine tune because the camera isn't set up right.

Seriously, if the camera did not have AF Fine Tune and the factory had to set the camera to an effective +20 you would never know it. You would go on taking pictures getting good results. Practically, what difference does it make if the pictures are in focus?
