In todays digital age, are $2000 lenses still a necessity?

Hello,
I was wondering just this...
Today we live in a digital world, were we usually process our pictures on state of the art software like Photoshop that has some great tools to enhance a photo.
We all know that pro grade lenses, either zoom or primes, in addition to great build quality and weather sealing, also feature great optical qualities that translate in an image with great contrast, colour and sharpness...
I was just wondering if today, does lenses still make a difference if you process your pictures and adjust them with software.
If you don't need the professional build quality, is the big money justifiable?
Thoughts...?
Cheers!
