I wonder how many of you want to upgrade to Nikon D1700, please also explain why?

I will buy a D7100 for sure but as a backup, and all-around shooter to my more specialized FF. And  I'm also interested in getting more reach with my 70-200 f4 lens (crop mode on my FF camera works great, but the VF has crop marks so is not as nice to use as a dedicated crop sensor camera like the D7000/D71000).

Why am I asking this question? because to me there isn't much difference in D7000 - D7100 except some minor. Share your thoughts;-)

If I still had a D7000, except for some minor limitations for video, I could use it happily for the next few years.  It's an awesome camera with superb IQ.

That said, I don't see the D7100 updates as minor at all.

  • Higher resolution files (16 mp vs 24 mp) providing more options for cropping in post

  • No OPLF (Optical Low-Pass Filter) should mean sharper, better rendering of fine details. This is a fairly major update.  No OPLF and good Nikkor lens should provide impressive results relative to other APS-C cameras on the market.  In a crowded enthusiast camera market, Nikon had to do something bold, and no OPLF was just the bold move, IMHO.  All the cameras with no AA-filter - D800E, K-5 IIs, X-Pro1, M9, et al give such detailed, sharp images with very little downside in terms of moire.  This is a fairly major update.

  • New AF system with the ability to AF with lenses as dark as f8 gives lots of options with telephotos/TC combos.

  • Significant video updates - if it performs as well as the D5200 does in video mode, it's going to be an awesome HDSLR video camera capable of professional quality results

  • 1.3 X crop mode producing a 15 mp file.  I use crop mode all of the time on my FF camera and a crop mode on a crop sensor = more shooting sports, distant sunrises or critters.

  • Minor updates like the high res LCD, improved weather sealing, et al

Anyway, the D7100 looks like an excellent update (at least on paper) on the already superb D7000 And the price is reasonable since I really don't need the 18-105 VR.  Anyway, kudos Nikon.

Regards and happy shooting, Markus
