NEX - DSLR comparisons
In reply to paulcraig, 3 months ago

I use both and prefer the feel and handling of a DSLR over a NEX, but only if the DSLR is light and compact such as a Canon 550D.

DSLRs are faster and easier to use, permit rapid single shot shooting (with the NEX-5 there is a long wait), have far more buttons close to hand, are easier to zoom (particularly compared with Sony's terrible 16-50 electronic pancake) and have far easier menu systems than the NEX, which lets be honest has a menu which defies all logic.

A compact DSLR is no more hassle to carry around than a NEX. A beast like the Nikon D90 or indeed D7100 is something else altoghether however.

My dream camera would be a compact DSLR like the 550D but with a far larger viewfinder. Pentax made one back in 2005, but no one's managed it since, and as they are unlikely to I'm slowly coming round to the idea that my next camera will be an NEX-8.

The fact that that doesn't particularly fill me with joy says a lot about the handling and menu limitations of the NEX range. But I accept that the output of a NEX is every bit as good as that of a DSLR.
