Homicides in Australia - latest data
Feb 21, 2013

http://www.aic.gov.au/publications/current%20series/mr/21-40/mr21.html

- the homicide rate has declined steadily, from 1.8/100,000 per year in 1989/90 to 1.2 in 2009/10.

- the proportion of homicides in which a gun was used is now 13%, half the proportion in 1989/90 (immediately after the ban on semi-automatic weapons and the gun buy-back).

- nearly all of the decline in the overall rate is due to the decline in gun homicides (total annual homicides have declined from 307 to 257 and gun homicides from 76 to 31).

- the homicide rate per 100,000 using other means has stayed the same: the story that people will kill with whatever is available and reduced gun homicides will be compensated by homicides with other weapons is false.
