Are Canon and Nikon falling behind on entry-level DSLRs?
Feb 21, 2013

It seems like Sony (A58) and Pentax (K30) are improving from one generation to the next faster than Canon and Nikon are. Obviously they are still going to sell a ton of cameras because of their brand power but it seems to me that purely from a standpoint of features, and image quality, and performance, Canon and Nikon may be in third and fourth place based on what they offer at the entry level price point. It is important to remember that the vast majority of people who buy entry-level DSLRs have very little to no previous investment in gear, so it seems that Canon and Nikon may be playing a dangerous game if they continue to rely on their brand power to sell cameras rather than the cameras' intrinsic appeal.
