To cpkuntz,
Hello, only objects (planets) BETWEEN us (Earth) and the Sun can show phases, i.e. the Moon, and true planets Venus and Mercury. other planets which are beyond our orbit, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus... cannot. It is easy to see if you take small spheres (oranges) and position them on a table (planetary plane) around a source of light. This would be called "rapid prototyping"... just kidding... it is simple geometry.
David's pictures are indeed amazing and his arrangement was very ingenious.
Regards,
Simon
