The NEX7 is a fine camera with superb resolution. Now, how to keep the kit not too big and get better IQ? Not an easy task.
All the adapters make the camera bigger. If you want good glass it is too big and usually too heavy. I found myself checking all adapters and am stuck at the choice of Metabones for Canon and EA2 for Sony lenses. EA2 has fast AF but new glass will have to be purchased. Canon lenses won't AF that quick with current adapters out there. Talk about frustrating. When it is all said and done I prefer fast and accurate autofocus over being able to use my Canon lenses.
Nothing solves the dilemma because the size becomes close to a DSLR. Carrying the NEX around isn't too conspicuous. As soon as you have a large camera people start taking notice of what you are doing. So for beach and street photography the small NEX7 with a small lens is ideal. IQ isn't up to the sensor and then reach is a problem. Ideally I would like 16 to 60 with excellent detail. f4 would be sufficient for my needs. 16-80 would be best for an all-round solution. E-mount with no adapter so it is quick to focus and not too long.
It doesn't look like Sony is solving this problem, either. Marketing is telling them what to produce and we enthusiasts miss out. I have been reading lens reviews and still haven't found a solution that is reasonably priced, sensible size, and of good quality. It looks like compromising is required to be partially satisfied.
Can I ask the good blokes here what solutions they have come up with and how satisfied they are with a walkaround kit.

Everyone is an expert on dpreview!
Wouldn't the upcoming 'G' mid tele lens (f/2.8 - f/4.0) fit the bill?
The 16-50 is almost there, it is definitely inconspicious.
The 7 does not have it, but the 6 allows you to double the effective FL with CIZ. For street photography this may suffice.
If you want a faster lens or higher IQ, the 1.8 line-up (E24, E35, E50) may give you a start. CIZ would let you turn each into a FL-to-2xFL fast lens.
Shooting the E35 as if a 70mm lens, the 1650 as if a 100mm lens, even the 18200 as if a 400mm lens is definitely a small setup. And multiply by crop factor for equivalent lens length.
I am actually considering the E20 in this regard, it would be a very small, almost pocketable, setup with a 20-40mm/f2.8 lens. In all fairness, the 1650, when collapsed, is not that much larger.
But even a 100mm/f2.8 OM lens on an adapter is barely larger than the 1855 kit lens, with amazing IQ on a Nex-7.
