Absolutely.  When my wife got her Canon 450D and EF-S 60mm macro lens a few years back, she was very disappointed with her initial results.  That lens is actually incredibly sharp and, once she worked out the minimum hand-holding shutter speed for macro shots, the results were superb.

Remember that as the magnification increases, the handholding speed needs to increase as well.  If you can get consistently sharp images at a particular speed at normal distances, you may need to double the shutter speed once you start focussing closer.

For instance, her lens is equivalent to a 90mm lens in 35mm terms but, whenever she is shooting macro, she tries to keep the speed at 1/160 second or higher.
