Hi Trevor, lovely bird images!

I shoot with the 100-300 extensively and I think it's a fantastic bit of kit. Teamed with my OMD it easily rivals a good DSLR setup. The caveat being that you must get a 'good copy' and employ sound technique. I've talked about this lens a lot on one of my blogs, with a few most recent words here: http://lindsaydobsonphotography.com/pets/panasonic-100-300-wildlife-photography-sussex/

So how many did you have to go through to get a good one?

What are the symptoms of a bad one? Soft at 300mm, de-centred?

This could be why I see so many on e-bay.

The first one was soft from about 230mm. The second copy was totally different, very sharp, nice contrast, softening only slightly right at the extreme long end which I think it should be forgiven for since it's a 'super tele zoom'. Copy variance aside I suspect a fair amount of the disappointment might be down to inappropriate use (ie too slow a shutter etc).
