Why do DSLR cameras have two shutter curtains?

I have been playing with off-camera flash lately, so I learned about front and rear sync modes. That made me wonder why DSLRs have two shutter curtains. Do two curtains ensure that no light will reach the sensor (or film for SLR cameras) at the end of the shot?
