We hear over and over and over that 7mm is much wider than 9mm-- a true statement. But also, the 7-14 has no 18mm focal length, and personally, I find the range of the 9-18 (18-36mm in FF terms) much more useful as 18mm is much "longer" than 14mm.

I've owned and used both but only have the 9-18 now-- a real gem IMO.

Well, any kit lens (and I trust most people have one) covers 14-18 mm, for example the 14-45/3.5-5.6 I use (which is slightly faster and slightly sharper over the range than the 9-18). I also have the 12/2 and 20/1.7 in the proximity of the 14-18 range, should I want to go faster. However, only the 7-14 covers the 7-9 range.

yes, but one can cover 14-18 without changing lenses...

Yes, and the 7-14 can cover 7-9 without changing lenses.

In practice, I rarely find a need to quickly change between UWA territory (7-12) and ordinary WA territory (14-18). I rarely bother to mount the 7-14 unless I have a clear idea for an UWA shot in mind and I am very unlikely to use it at any FL longer than 12 mm.

Above that point, I am happy with the 14-45 which allows me to move between 14 and 45 without changing lenses.
