GPS is a receiver. If you log the data, it remains internal without a cellular transmitter and ID. WiFi isn’t going to get you there. Then again, cell phone cameras can easily do this. Ugh!

Hmmm, yeah. I hadn't thought about that.

Well, for now then, perhaps a third party company could come up with a transmitter that transmits the GPS log.

Now the question is where would that go? Ah got it. Perhaps, if a third party company, or better still Canon themselves, made an accessory battery grip the transmitter could be built in to the grip.

Alternatively, perhaps just like we have with cars where a technician will install a Tracker hidden in the car, perhaps a service could be implemented whereby you send your camera off and it returns with a tracking device hidden away inside of it. All it would need to do is provide transmission facilities as the GPS logging is already there. Also a thief couldn't get to it unless they dismantled the camera, knew how to dismantle it and knew what to look for.

There are a few companies that I am sure we can trust with dismantling our cameras to fit such a device, I am thinking in particular of the companies that already have experience in dismantling cameras for the purpose of doing infrared conversions. This would be an additional income stream for them and reassurance for the customer that their camera is in the hands of a competent team.

What d'ya reckon on that then? Cool? Or am I living in a dream world?

Nothing wrong with living in a dream world! The technology has been here for quite some time. It’s subscriber fees that stymy it. With the advent of WiMax which is basically what 4G is today WiFi could possibly take us there someday but it will probably take big business kicking and screaming!!! I’ll spare you the Geeklish!!!
