Also with crop body your lenses become longer. On crop the $360 85 1.8 becomes a 135mm lens and the distance perspective of 135mm is very flattering.......to get the same distance compression out of a 5Dc you would have to buy the $1,000 135F2L and you'd be pushing your luck relying on the outer points with the 5Dc shooting with such a narrow DOF.

Crop can go as wide as FF with the wide lenses but you can a lot longer with a lot less money.

You need to experience FF really to understand the difference. You either cannot see or don't want to see. We went thru this before. Portraiture is one of areas I see FF advantage clearly as I cannot sustain noticeble grains on faces/skins from my 60D photos that I have to apply NR.

Check DXOMark sharpness and Resolution | FieldMap, you can see the same 85/1.8 lens on 5Dc or 135L/2.0 lens (that is a different class lens from 85/1.8) on 5Dc clearly beats 7D with 85/1.8. Those fast-aperture lenses on 5D also give welcome shallower DOF and better background blur in portrait photos.

DXOMark 5D vs 7D with 85/1.8 and 135L

However I agree that if you can afford 5D2, 6D and 5D3 get one of them as they have (much) needed new features to help you to take photos easier - more pixels, better LCD, less dust cleaning, higher ISO options and LiveView (LV) or if you need video.

I'll leave this thread with some real world results. Where is the grain at on the face?

did you apply NR or some portraiture plug-in that effectively clean but also smear details?

they are beautiful. but to be honest I don't see much facial details as in your samples. we don't compare contents but just on fine details or resolution.
