Re: Pentaxians - sell me on the K-30 - cannot go wrong with this choice.

I do not own a K-30 but may buy it or the K5II any day now as I am seeking to upgrade. But I have a lot of experience and knowledge of Pentax and I currently have Pentax gear. Pentax are not touted as being high class, but that is mainly because they are a small company with a low share of the market and low marketing budget.  However, they do produce excellent DSLRs such as the K-01, K5 and K30. They also produce a remarkable small interchangeable lens camera the PQ - smallest in the world with a lens inventory to boot. And they produce the large format Pentax 645D camera, again unique and lusted after by those who can afford this amazing camera. But back to your needs - I think the K-30 would serve your requirements well but do take the advice of handling any camera you are thinking about buying - massively important.

Otherwise, I think all the things you have said will work fine for you. The limited lenses that have been mentioned - outstanding but with price tags to match and few people can afford to buy many of them. I am not a fan of super zoom lenses but the 18-135 is as good as the rest and as you know it is WR. I think the strong points about the K-30 are the excellent sensor, reported fast focusing, high ISO sensitivity and oddly enough the viewfinder with a near 100% view, not generally available in that class of camera. On the downside is the battery power, at least for me. Here Pentax have provided an option for double AA batteries, a constituency that they have long served. The camera is supplied with a small li-lion battery and the option to use double AA batteries. I do not want to get into a discussion about batteries but I am one person who much prefers the li-lion option but I know plenty who disagree.

Try before you buy and good luck with your choice whatever that may be.
