Have myself at times been the target of abuse. There does exist a legitmate place for moderation.

(It seems to me) that the value of a moderating person is to exercise the kind of reasoned and reserved action (which you are here demonstrating) that responds to specifically noted cases of personal poster to poster verbal abuse when reported by a directly affected poster - if and when such a directly affected poster raises a specific issue regarding such incidents.

Whereas specific posts may be affected by such moderation n entactions, it seems (to me) that the locking or deletion of an entire thread should have a considerably higher threshold.

Such an approach (in my view) makes a lot more sense than assuming that a relatively small number of readers pushing buttons (for whatever reasons, and with whatever motivations) amounts to anything more meritorious than the (thankfully) long gone "thumbs down" system represented (which was but a bully pulpit for individuals seeking to deride the expressions of others without ever expressing their own thoughts with anything but a "binary" button-push).

I think that it may well serve to educate/inform the readership who chooses to read the thread.
