Larry, these two cameras have the same lens and you either have to be beyond two meters or very close, with little or no zoom, to get a focus. For these flower shots, I pushed the camera right in on top of them, to about 5 to 15 inches distance. The focal-lengths were 5mm, 11mm and 22mm for them (144mm is full zoom). It's surprising that the flash wasn't partially blocked, being so close, but it seemed to work out, if the subjects didn't go down into the lower third of the frame.

Here's a test shot with the HX100V, where I shot at full zoom and exactly from a measured distance of two meters. The DOF is so shallow at full zoom, that the difference in distance to the numbers in the middle and the boltheads on the outside of the plate, put the latter slightly out-of-focus and the area farther out, even more so.
