When I think about it, the Nikkormats were the lower-cost Nikon option in the 60s-70s, and they were marketed to hobbyists. But a lot of pros used them for the same reasons I liked them: they were relatively light but ruggedly constructed. And they cost a good deal less than a Nikon F.

Last time I asked my old FT2 was still going strong. I own another black FT2 that I purchased around 15 years ago. It was owned by a retired man who kept it in his safe and hardly ever used it. It's still in excellent condition; I rarely shot with it because I used motor-drive Nikons for work. Burt I liked to take it out and put a few rolls through it from time to time.
