My laptop is from 2009. I've read that hdmi 1.4 can handle 1900 x 1200, but anything prior can only do 1080. Hdmi 1.4 came out in second half 2009. I don't know what I have. Anyone delt with this?

The early HDMI specs can handle up to 1920 x 1200. The HDMI 1.3 spec (2006) can handle up to 2560×1600, and HDMI 1.4 spec (2009) can handle up to 4096×2160.

Though that is just the spec, not what any actual piece of hardware can handle. You would ideally want to check the max HDMI resolution of your specific laptop model. It likely will handle it, but no guarantee, unless they say it will, or other people have confirmed it will.

My little netbook has no problem doing 2560 x 1440 via HDMI with my 27" monitor, but some hardware has lower limitations than others.
