It's not just "some reading" suggestions.... It is the reason they were created, are available & supplied with most lenses.

Rather unfortunately, Canon does not supply them with their consumer grade lenses - only L lenses.  Fortunately there are plenty of 3rd party solutions that are exactly the same size & shape, but half the cost or less, of the Canon version.

Mine are always with me (when I have my backpack), and stored mounted backwards on their respective lenses.

Yup, they take up very little space.
