I shoot 50/1.8 and 85/1.8 prime without IS. But 2.8 is not slower, and the lens is much bigger and heavier.

Well, if you use the 1/focal length rule of thumb for shutter speed, then you need between 1/24 and 1/70 second, depending on focal length. So ask yourself, how often will you need to shoot handheld with slower shutter speeds?

The answer really depends on subject matter and style of shooting. But for my primary subject matter  and style of shooting, the answer is not often, particularly given the relatively fast f/2.8 aperture and my 5D3's high ISO capability.
