What you are suggesting is a budget Leica M9.... but called a Sony NEX. Not only would it be a lot cheaper than a Leica, but it would use the similar high quality German lenses, and give you CDAF ability, if you wanted it.

And I suppose there could be a market for that.

But a lot of Leica users aren't looking for a good deal on a camera. Especially if it lacks a red dot on it. They prefer paying a lot for a camera because it keeps the riff-raff out. In other words, people like us. So you can rule out the status and prestige crowd.

So what market is left?

If anyone wants a FF camera at a good price, then they can probably buy a Nikon D600 or Canon 6D for less. And Zeiss makes lenses for those too.

I doubt a FF NEX camera would be cheap, especially when the Sony RX-1 came in at $2,800.

That puts a FF NEX in a tough spot. Not enough prestige to get the status crowd, and not a low enough price to get the value shoppers. Does Sony need another halo product they will lose money on?
