I agree that I cannot fathom their approach either re D300 / D700 replacements. As you say, THAT is one area that WILL sell buckets even with the competition in cheaper mirrorless options, their lower end DX is the one that will suffer. On the CX, I wonder if they simply misjudged market and NEX / OM-D has taken them by surprise?

Remember early on some wondered what Oly were doing rehashing OM series. But look what has happened, it is a huge success and I suspect we will see more in that line now (back to film days of a couple/ few Oly OM's?).

And the NEX. I remember early days seeing the 5 without viewfinder, though great but not without a viewfinder. Now the 7 and 6 are stealing the show.

I think Nikon / Canon were caught napping by Oly and Sony. That is all.

I don't think Nikon was caught napping at all.  Clearly they have a corporate strategy and are executing it.  It's just that they, like everyone else, have to set priorities based on finite resources.  They can't do everything at once.  So they've dealt with the FX and CX priorities in 2012.

2013 gives the D7200 and D400 which completes the DX line.  With FX and DX and CX in place, then absolutely they have DX mirrorless coming.  They absolutely have to deliver mirrorless DX as part of their line up in order to survive and they know it better than any of us.  On the CX side, one would have to think a fixed-lens 1" compact and a pro-CX body are in the running too.  And don't forget video, this is huge and vital, as is all the wireless and GPS tech too.

Pretty soon Nikon will be offering:

- full FX DSLR lineup (adding even a D5200 equivalent);

- full DX DSLR camera lineup;

- budding mirrorless DX lineup with on-sensor PDAF;

- ever growing CX lineup;

- compacts.

It's just a matter of time and priorities.
