Er, in my post I mention that (a) The camera firmware is 1.5 and (b) the Olympus site lists the latest firmware as 1.2...
And I can find no link to update the kit lens' firmware (currently 1.1)

Roy,
the firmware update is done ia the Oly Viewer software that came with the camera. The sw will check the camera and attached lens and show you if new firmware is available.
The latest fw for the E-M5 is indead V1.5, for the kit lens i don't know. FW 1.5 works perfectly OK and is for sure not the reason why your camera freezes.
What you should do immediately is contact the Olympus service in your country and complain. This is NOT OK, they should take over from here at least without additional costs for postage on your side.
Tell them the mFT users of dpr are waiting to hear how they react :wink:
