No, I have a D800 and it is great.

Why spend about the same price for lower resolution and whatever else would be downgraded to make a price point that those wanting 6-8fps have been demanding.

Files are not THAT large, 42mb are hardly too much for any competent computer to process.

My friends who shoot sports professionally use the D800 and D4 both with great success. The D600 is no slouch either with its AF tweaking making the Multi-Cam 4800FX into a very competent AF system, better than in the D7000, which is also a class topping camera.

The best deal now for the sports shooter who does not need ultimate IQ is the D3s but the D800 and D4 which both AF down to -2ev are better in really low light or with TCs. No other cameras AF better in low light than the D800/4 now.

What would you leave out of a D800 to get a price down to satisfy those demanding a fast camera with lower IQ at a low price. The new improved subsystems introduced in the D4 and D800 add up to a $3000 or more camera regardless of the pixel count. Would you leave out the new high res metering sensor? That impacts tracking and makes the new cameras the best for tracking during the blackout period. What other modules would you cheapen to hit a below $3000 price point?

If speed trumps all for you, get a used D3s, it is exactly what you need then. I, myself, will still take the gorgeous D800 images over a D3 in almost any conditions except near total darkness.
