Well if Nikon doesn't care about the answer to that question, then they won't sell as many cameras as if they had a good answer.

This assertion has to be false because Canon did not care and they sold loads more 5D2 than D700.

Every sports/action shooter I know who was using a D300 or D700 is not buying any of Nikon's other products right now because they don't meet their action needs. Many have even frozen their other Nikon spending (like lenses) because of the uncertainty about whether they are going to stay with Nikon. So, the answer appears to be that these users are just sitting on the sidelines and starting to think about non-Nikon options.

that might be the case. but give the successful design of D600 and D800, many non-nikon users have switched to nikon on these bodies. so the market left for D700 II is now a lot smaller than original D700 had. which brings us back to the second question I asked.

If Canon comes out with a good option, these customers who probably wouldn't have even thought about Canon are going to give it a serious look.

Well. there is no "IF" now. Canon's stance is very clear, you either pay 3500 for 6FPS and good AF, or 2000 for super elementary AF and 4.5 FPS. Nikon clearly has nothing to worry about.

So, Nikon either doesn't find it worth it to serve these customers so they're fine if they don't buy anything or leave to a competitor,

As analysed above, Nikon does not find it worth it to serve these customers because they are not going anywhere.

they miscalculated and are only now discovering that this segment isn't being served by the current products (this one seems unlikely because anyone who understands action shooting should know action shooters don't want to take a step backwards in AF, fps, build, etc...)

Clearly they didnt, because D700 II watchers have no where to go.
