I'm a clarinet player. For anyone who doesn't know, clarinets need reeds to play, these are essentially small wood "things" that you need to buy once in a while. Kind of like strings for guitars, except being wood, more unpredictable. It is pretty much impossible to guarantee each reed you make will be good, or even usable. They are usually sold in boxes of 10 and many complain about getting only a few good ones in each box.

Anyway... The biggest company in the reed business used to have, in addition to their "regular" model (which IMO is very good) a Hand Select model. These reeds were exactly the same, except they supposedly double checked each one that went into a box. It cost double.

Well... some people bought these Hand Select reeds. Some dismissed them as just more expensive. Some praised them as really better. A few people were annoyed that the "regular" ones should have been as good.

To make a long story a bit shorter... they stopped making these Hand Select reeds.

Obviously it wouldn't work the same for cameras. They should be essentially identical and you are not working with natural unpredictable products. I think you're completely right about the concept. Really, they should just make them all good (as much as possible) and fix problems. It seems they do not do this now.
