So, the path Nikon chose was to leave their customers uniformed unless they happened to notice that their camera was performing below how it should or happened upon some article like this. For me, that does not inspire confidence in a company that one buys a $3000 fine instrument from and commits many more thousands of dollars on lenses. I guess that's OK with you, but not with me. I think it's horrific customer care for an expensive, finely tuned product. I would expect to be able to subscribe to and receive important service advisories on such an expensive product.

It is not wonderful customer care, nor is it horrific. It is typical. When only a percentage of units are faulty, companies often just fix it when users bring it in with a complaint about that problem. Sometimes they will do stealth repairs on units that came in for something else. BMW has done it both ways. The only time they notified customers is when they had a recall on something that caused injuries.

Rarely will a company contact customers about a non-fatal issue as obscure as a left AF point being out of alignment. From the posts about testing for this problem on dpreview, most people had to use a wide lens at wide apertures to see the problem. A few were more radically out, but most of them seemed to be fairly subtle.

What Nikon is telling the market now is that you have to thoroughly test your own product in all relevant ways in order to know whether it is performing properly, even after you just bought it because even if we (Nikon) know about a problem in our inventory or in recently purchased cameras, we won't be telling you about it. It's buyer-beware with the quality of new Nikon equipment.

They are telling you that if you have a problem, send it in.
