Japanese companies tend to be more long-term oriented than USA companies. The quarterly numbers is more of a USA thing. That said, how did the finance guys prevent the engineers from making a diagnosis, developing a fix, and disseminating the fix to service centers?

Isn't it more likely that the problem was difficult, it took awhile to solve it, and getting new equipment built and sent out to every service center is what took the time?

That would be a short term decision at the cost of long term brand trust and loyalty (which is not uncommon for decisions motivated only by short term finances). But, many times that is not the right decision for the longer run because brand trust and loyalty is even more costly to build and losing it costs future sales.

Yes, but what evidence is there that Nikon didn't try their best to get the problem solved? How do you know it was a financial decision that delayed the fix?

I didn't say it was a financial decision that delayed the fix. I listed many other things that probably delayed it. Instead, I suspect that is was a financial decision that kept Nikon from communicating ANYTHNG to the market (both current owners and prospective owners) about the issue.

You said, "My guess is that some early confusion about what the problem really was, a slow-to-react HQ and some poor lines of communication between HQ and field repair offices put them really behind the 8-ball and by the time they actually understood the problem, the finance guys clamped down and told them to limit how much this would cost to keep the current quarter's numbers from going south."

Sounds like you are saying that the finance guys prevented the engineers from getting the fix out to service centers.

If you were a current owner, you'd want to know exactly how to figure out if your camera was afflicted and what to do if it was. I've never seen such a public communication form Nikon HQ. Have you?

This article says they acknowledged the problem in Sept. Do you really think Nikon is going to advertise that they have a problem and tell users how to look for it? Be realistic. The result of that would be a lot of misdiagnosed cameras coming back to Nikon for service they didn't need. If you read Thom's blog you might recall him saying that a large percentage of the reports he go were misdiagnosed. Nikon's approach was to try to deal with cameras as they came back for repair. That is a pretty standard way to deal with such things.
