Companies make multiple products because they reach a LARGER portion of the market and make higher profits by doing so. Every additional product overlaps some in customers with other products n the line, but you need more than one product to meet the needs of more customers.

"More than one"?

D3200

D5200

D7000

D600

D800

D4

(and continued sales of D3/D3s/D3x/D700)

I think that meets the needs of just about everyone - except perhaps a small number of DX-centered 'pro' telephoto shooters.

Keep in mind that spreading yourself very thin, offering too many products is a way to lose focus and lose profitability.

There are no continued new sales of D3, D3s or D700.  Those cameras are all discontinued. One can only buy them used or perhaps find something that's been hidden in inventory somewhere.

Do you not think it's odd at all that a market segment that Nikon served amazingly well with both the D300 and D700 (affordable and high quality action in FX and DX) is better served by buying an older used camera than buying a new camera?  Do you think that helps Nikon sales?
