Hmm. My understanding is that the iPhone 3 and above, and many other gps-capable devices, have what's called assisted GPS or A-GPS. And A-GPS does communicate with satellites.

I cannot say for certain what devices have Assisted gps, but I posted what I was told by iPhone tech support at Apple. And, the more I think about it the more I believe that the first place I contacted was also Apple tech support.

The tech rep who I spoke with today put me on hold to check if what he said was correct. When he came back from the hold he told me that his information had been confirmed.

Of course the easiest way to verify this would be to try to use gps functionality some place where there is no signal. I do not think that this can be verified by removing a sim card since, even without the sim, the phone is probably capable of receiving data signals. The next time I am travelling through an area without cell service (and I do this regularly when I go camping) I will make sure that this is correct, but I believe Apple is right about this.
