Nikon screwed up on their quality control (D800-D4), they did not admit to their mistakes, and they have ignored building products that their customers asked for (D700, D7k, D300 successor). And they wonder why they are loosing market share? The lens rebates is a nice gesture, but until Nikon gets their act together, I think they are going to continue to slide.

Do you have some sales numbers to show that Nikon is losing DSLR market share? The only articles I've seen are about P&S cameras. DSLR production is a small part of Nikon's business. The P&S market is being threatened by cel phones.

I believe Thom Hogan recently described Nikon's recent quarter as "holding market share in a decliing overall dSLR market".

Yes, which is not the same as "losing market share", as you said in your original post up there, which I've bolded for you.

I'm not the person who said that (that was Robin). I was just joining in and adding some new data to the discussion.

The D7100 is rumored to be announced very soon. The D300 replacement is likely to happen this year.

The D300 upgrade is ridiculously long overdue which is certainly a missed revenue opportunity. Who knows if it will ever happen.

One wonders how much revenue was actually 'missed'.

Many of the folks who bought the D300 upgraded to FX, or went lateral to the D7000 ('lateral' as in: IQ upgrade, body-perf downgrade.) The folks who are left are some birders, some sports shooters who didn't want the D800... traditionally a smallish market. Dedicated-telephoto-shooting DX owners can be vocal, but I think their numbers are small. Nikon and apparently Canon seem to know so as well.

A Luddite version of the D800 is not going to happen. Nikon learned their lesson with the D700 being too close to the D3. If you need high fps rates you gotta pony up for the D4.

Then, Nikon will just forfeit the majority of the amateur sports/action market.

DX-only sports/action market - which is small.

I didn't say anything about DX-only sports/action market. Nikon is not serving any of the dSLR sports/action market right now other than those who can afford the $6000 D4. So, all those earlier sports/action customers who bought the D700 or D300 becuase that's what they could afford have nothing from Nikon to buy. Gee maybe Nikon would sell more if they served that market.

If you ask me, sports/action is still one of the remaining reasons for amateurs (e.g. soccer moms/dads) to buy a dSLR. Mirrorless performance is really, really good for a lot of what consumers shoot, but for AF and tracking with fps it doesn't even come close to a good dSLR. If Nikon doesn't want to serve that segment, then their dSLR sales will erode even faster over time than need be because they remove one less reason for a consumer to buy a dSLR. If I were Nikon, I'd make sure I was serving the real strengths of the dSLR market - particularly the parts that mirrorless can't do yet.

Customers who shoot action and aren't in the D4 price range are voting with their wallets and not buying the D600 or D800 because they don't meet their needs. It also doesn't help that there's no new DX camera for action shooters either.

It would be nice to introduce one, but I don't think you can prioritize it highly if you know the market realities.

Nikon can decide they don't want to sell to us, I guess. In a maturing market (which dSLRs certainly are), manufacturers generally create more specialized products that address different more specialized segments of the market and that's how they entice the most customers to upgrade. Nikon has gone the reverse direction for sports/action which is odd. They are now offering fewer products to buy than they used to for the sports/action shooter and none for the amateur, but discerning sports/action shooter.
