DX 'pro' market is small

Do you have some sales numbers to show that Nikon is losing DSLR market share? The only articles I've seen are about P&S cameras. DSLR production is a small part of Nikon's business. The P&S market is being threatened by cel phones.
I believe Thom Hogan recently described Nikon's recent quarter as "holding market share in a decliing overall dSLR market".

The D7100 is rumored to be announced very soon. The D300 replacement is likely to happen this year.
The D300 upgrade is ridiculously long overdue which is certainly a missed revenue opportunity. Who knows if it will ever happen.
One wonders how much revenue was actually 'missed'.
Many of the folks who bought the D300 upgraded to FX, or went lateral to the D7000 ('lateral' as in: IQ upgrade, body-perf downgrade.) The folks who are left are some birders, some sports shooters who didn't want the D800... traditionally a smallish market. Dedicated-telephoto-shooting DX owners can be vocal, but I think their numbers are small. Nikon and apparently Canon seem to know so as well.

A Luddite version of the D800 is not going to happen. Nikon learned their lesson with the D700 being too close to the D3. If you need high fps rates you gotta pony up for the D4.
Then, Nikon will just forfeit the majority of the amateur sports/action market.
DX-only sports/action market - which is small.

Customers who shoot action and aren't in the D4 price range are voting with their wallets and not buying the D600 or D800 because they don't meet their needs. It also doesn't help that there's no new DX camera for action shooters either.
It would be nice to introduce one, but I don't think you can prioritize it highly if you know the market realities.
