Several Nikon products were initially made in Japan and later in other countries with lower production costs, for example the 105mm Micro Nikkor. It's entirely possible that some or all D800 cameras are now made in Thailand.

It is said that the D800 was originally scheduled for Thailand, but after the floods, Nikon moved the line, with the Thai staff trained to assemble the D800, to Sendai. It would not be surprising if they have now relocated it back, but the reason would be to release capacity in Sendai for a new model - which would be? Only thing that makes sense is a D4X, perhaps a move into cinema camera market, doesn't seem wise to me, but everyone else is doing it.
