You do realize that the Toshiba sensor in the D5200 is the very best performing APS-C sensor in the world?

Is it? I rather doubt that. But, let's say that it is. What is the point of having 24mp in the d5200? Be realistic here. How many users will really benefit from having that much resolution? How many d5200 users will use only the very best lenses and the very best technique that is required to get anywhere close to 24mp of resolution in their daily images? How many will print 20x30 and larger prints?

You certainly don't need 24mp to print 4x6 prints or to post images to facebook or some web site or send them to friends and relatives in email. So, seriously, how many users really need and will take advantage of that 24mp sensor? Aside from some little check box in the brain that says more is better, how many d5200 users will really, honestly benefit from 24mp? My guess would be maybe 1%, maybe.

The point of high resolution sensors in the lower end of the product line is pure marketing. Most people buying these cameras don't know how to evaluate what features will really make their images better or not. They read the specs and might read one review. To them 24MP seems better than their old camera, better than their smartphone, better than their P&S. And, it costs more so it must be better. And, the sales person said it takes great pics. Seriously, that's about as much thought that goes into this for many buyers. Give them a choice between a 12MP, 18MP and 24MP camera and they'll choose the 24MP camera every time. Nikon knows this and that's why the low-end of the dSLR line had to have 24MP. It's better than most mirror-less and there's nothing higher than it in their price range.

The 3200 and 5200 are NOT about what will produce the absolute best IQ for what the user regularly shoots and how they view the images. That's relevant and not ignored by Nikon, but the #1 thing Nikon cares about is what they will buy and how their purchase decision works.

The thinly masked contempt that you and Kerry have for photographers who don't use 'pro' equipment like you is hilarious. So, we assume that D5200 users never print bigger than postcard (Kerry), that they don't seek to own good lenses (Kerry), they don't know how to evaluate what (sic) features will make their images better or not, their thought processes about camera choice amount to reading the specs and one review (you). To them 24MP seems better than their old camera, better than their smartphone, better than their P&S (you).

'Seriously, that's about as much thought that goes into this for many buyers. Give them a choice between a 12MP, 18MP and 24MP camera and they'll choose the 24MP camera every time.' Not like  you, with all your expertise and knowledge, so much of it that Nikon has a duty to make you the 'pro' camera you want, no demand.

Surprisingly enough, more than a few of these people are serious and competent photographers. Here's a little news for you. The majority of photographers have have these contemptible non-pro cameras, and take very good photos with them.

These cameras might not be good enough for you, or just possible, they might be too good.
