It feels like you're missing the point of m43 (and half frame in the 50s and 60s)

? Forget old vs new tech just take a FF 12-16mp sensor, throw in something compact, it 'll sell faster than OMD's. I can't see why we should settle for less. It's funny how so many good pics where taken before editing software. Maybe when photography was real we controlled the tech instead of making it a crutch !

FF sensor = full sized lenses - there's no crop factor advantage - you want a 300mm equivalent FOV with AF - you have to have a 300mm long lens with the weight of the AF mechanism and the bigger chunks of glass that you need.

I'm not sure how well it would sell - Leica did what you are asking for (and I bought one - and if I didn't need a reliable camera for work I'd still have it) but the cost was very high - part of that was making the sensor work properly with wide angle lenses - that's an issue with wide lenses, larger sensors and shorter registers....

So to make it affordable, useful and small we need to stick to a fairly "standard" lens range... Like the new Sony - or if you don't mind going a bit bigger for the overall system something like the Canon 6D with pancake lenses - oh wait Canon already make that system

Oh my, 300 is 300, 50 is 50, and if I crop any part of a full frame neg, jpeg, cr1 or whatever. That image will duplicate your so called advantage. The compacts didn't need big glass to fill a kodachrome slide. They won't need big glass to fill a ff sensor. Let's see, Oly took some cowboys rhinestone, stuck it plastic, called it 15mm and oh my ! Guess they did it for kicks (explains thier financials).

Olympus did the same as they are now in 1959 with the original PEN (half frame camera)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympus_Pen

So it's not a new concept or something that they've just cooked up...

As for the advantage - I am talking a size advantage - I don't need to carry the big kit to crop it later - I can carry smaller get and get the same FOV as the eventual crop, with higher resolution too - that is the whole concept of m43 and even 43!!!

Did you actually read any of the rest of what I wrote?  My point was that if you want to use longer or shorter than normal focal length lenses you will need a bigger solution (camera or camera and lens combination) and/or for wide angles that the cost will go up.

The compacts did not need big glass, you're right - very few (if any) offered anything like the resolving power, convenience or intelligence of the current m4/3 system and I am guessing that you are talking about fixed focal length compacts and I am guessing ones where you do not see through the lens.
Someone has done exactly what you are asking for - made the true successor to a high end compact with a full frame sensor - Sony with the RX1.

I'm happy to discuss - I thought you wanted to understand why no one is giving you your ideal camera and I was trying to explain but if you're just going to be offensive about other people's choices (I invested money in this system and sold off FF kit as I see it being the future) then I'm out.
