Only if you had your own darkroom and printed your own photos. If not a (good) processing lab did would do what they could to print a decent photo from your poorly exposed negatives.

Reversal films were a little less forgiving. There wasn't much they could do in the lab once you'd exposed it.

That said, I believe film has a wider dynamic range than digital sensors.
