Simply put, the digital cameras of today are far more capable than any of those old film cameras ever were, and today's sensors require lenses to resolve a lot more than any piece of film. The game has changed. Add to that the requirement to capture and process digital files instead of simply opening and closing a curtain and today's cameras seem like small miracles in comparison. Those old tiny 35mm cams are still out there, if you want one. There's no way in hell I'd go back.

Might as well compare a VW Beetle with a Toyota Prius. They're both cars, but the Beetle had no heat, got a little over 20MPG, was amazingly slow, and polluted quite a bit for a small car. The Prius gets over twice the MPG, has all the creature comforts of any modern car (CD, satellite radio, AC, auto trans, etc), is more reliable, and is one of the cleanest cars on the road.

IOW, comparing today's cars or cameras against yesterday's stuff is meaningless.

Ya use adapters to put old glass on new tech. New beetles are all hi tech now, but still compact. The Oly 15mm probably has less glass than the XA so how's that for new/old/tiny ! Again, the point is going smaller isn't how you gain pixels. Keep reducing the well size (single pixal area) and the well will run dry (along with your wallet).
