D800 is a superset of the D700, and a worthy 'successor'

Chad, -- all I was saying is that you don't need 36MP to shoot basketball in a dark gym. You don't print those pics at 20x30 -- do you?

I'd imagine that the cropping capability alone would make the D800 a powerful indoor sports shooting machine. I've used both my D700 and D800 for indoor swimming, relatively poorly-lit venue, and the D800 is a class above. Downsampled uncropped, or tightly cropped when needed - far ahead of what the 12MP D700 (or D3) could bring.

.

...I've shot my share of basketball in dark gyms with D700 and D3s, and I wouldn't print anything of that nature larger than 12x18 at the most.

There you go - me neither, usually. I'll bet you wouldn't want to crop much at ISO 6400, either - the D800 removes those restrictions.

.

... We'll see a D700 successor if and when the D4 sensor makes it into a D800 style body,

That would be a compelling body for some, but Nikon may not do that again - D3 dropped off a cliff after the D700 was introduced.

.

... Until that time, the only real D700 successor for those unable or unwilling to shell 6K for D4 is a used D3s in the 3 to 4K range.

The D800 is an incredible D700 successor - it's a superset of the D700, it does everything the D700 does and more. Anyone hanging on to the D700 waiting for another body is truly missing out, and I really mean that.
