I have checked out various internet sites and the info on the old 70-200 IS seems to confirm that its not for the faint at heart. The lens seems to comes apart "bottom up" so to say, which implies that I will have to completely dismount the whole lens to get to the focus ring which is at the top. On the other hand, if it can be disassembled "top-down", it looks much easier.

Contacted Canon CPS today and am waiting for their reply (CPS "Gold" should be 3 days turnaround time - but this does not include delivery time). Not looking forward to their price estimate either...
