Using images from the public domain

Hello wise ones -

I've started fooling around with Elements, and have occasionally found myself searching Google images for objects or images to incorporate ´╗┐in to my work, probably because my body of work is not extensive enough yet.

I never use anything that is clearly copyrighted.

What's the etiquette for such use?

Simply to acknowledge the credit/source if I post them up?

Or is this sort of a thing disallowed/frowned upon?

I'm not doing it for sales or profit at all, just for my learning and fun.

Thanks in advance.
